Chairman Mao, when meeting the Japanese physicist S. Sakata (who was one of the poineers for the quark model), stated: “Elementary particles can’t be elementary”. Sheldon Glashow appreciated this philosophy and hence proposed that we should name the sub-structural particles under quarks “Maon”. Do you think that “Maons” must exist or not, based on physics arguments rather than your belief?

There is really no physics law that hinders Maons from existing. Thus, we can't really say with certainty that it does not exist. After all, ancient Greeks (Leucippus and Democritus) thought atoms are indivisible already. They were however proven wrong when our technology allowed us to probe dimensions than is in the order of the size of atoms. In order for us to probe the constituents of quarks should they exist we have to go to an energy regime we can't access yet. What makes it more complicated too, if you apply energy (by smashing another particle onto it) to a quark you will end up generating more particles.

If we don't have a way to test its existence or non-existence, then its value as an idea is not so important yet in a scientific point of view.

Take a foot-long stick, cut it in half every day, you'd never come to the end.” -Chuang Tzu

Given the most powerful tools today, cutting a foot-long stick half every day would only take you roughly 50 days to reach the point where you only have a single nucleon to work with. Technically it is the end, since until now no one has been able to separate quarks from each other. A nucleon of course is made of up three quarks. In this sense, Chuang Tzu is wrong.

However, it can be argued that you can try to separate quarks, albeit very briefly, by colliding two nucleons after accelerating it close to the speed of light. By doing this you would just create more particles. In an effort to further “divide” a nucleon, you will end up having extra particles to worry about (Are they still part of the stick or not?, Do I have to continue “cutting” these in half too?, etc..). In this sense, you'd never come to an end. You will always have a particle which isn't elementary as we know it (quarks, leptons or guage bosons) to “cut”. If you take this line of argument, Chuang Tzu is correct.

Install ROOT on Macbook Air 2010 11" Running OSX Lion

I. Getting the source

To install ROOT from source you first have to get the tar file containing the source. This tar file can be found in the usual ROOT download area (ftp://root.cern.ch/root). The files are named
root-.source.tar.gz.

Here's a short summary:

1) Get access to the FTP area (substitute any FTP client and appropriate
email address below):

prompt% ftp root.cern.ch
User: anonymous
Password:

2) Go to the directory, and prepare for binary transfer of files:

ftp> cd /root
ftp> bin

3) Get the sources tar-ball (substitute the appropriate version
number), and exit FTP client:

ftp> get root-.source.tar.gz

4) Unpack the distribution:

II. Getting ready to build

You may want to compile features into ROOT, which depends on third party libraries. For OS X, all you need to do is install Xcode. To install Xcode,

1) Go to the App Store then search Xcode. Click install (This will actually download Xcode installer instead of installing it).

2) When it is "done", go to the Applications folder and click on the "Install Xcode" file to install Xcode.

III. Install ROOT

1) Run the following commands to install ROOT:

./configure macosx64 --prefix=/usr/local
make -j2
gmake install

Hidden Valley Model

Hidden Valley Model (HVM) is a class of Hidden Sector Model (HSM) with strong dynamics and a spectrum light enough to be observed by the current collider experiments. Like the HSM, it proposes a hidden or dark sector that only communicates with the Stardard Model (SM) via some messenger field X. X is assumed to be heavy or couples very weakly to the SM, which could explain why it is difficult to observe. These models hypothesize the existence of particles, other than the known Standard Model Particles, which interacts very weakly.

These models can explain the excess in cosmic ray mon events with high muon multiplicities that has been reported from cosmic ray studies with ALEPH and DELPHI detectors. It can also partially account for the excess in multi-muon events that was found by the CDF experiment.

Facts on healing
1. Drop items which increase your HP/Mana before healing or regenerating mana. Pick them up again after regen. This will increase the actual amount you regenned (e.g. you have 400/750 HP and a Vitality Booster. Drop it and your HP becomes 400/500, drink a Salve to make it 500/500 and pick the item up for 750/750. )
2. Urn heal doesn't stack with Tango or Salve heal
3. Casting the positive Urn buff (healing) on a unit that has the negative one negates both effects (0 HP lost)
4. Due to the damage mechanic of Pudge's Rot, both the victim and Pudge can heal with Salve/Clarity/etc. while under the effect of level 1/2/3 Rot. Doesn't work with level 4 though.
5. Repeatedly selecting your hero while healing at the fountain doesn't make him/her heal faster.

Some tips on using Ghost Scepter
Ghost Scepter's prone magic state diminishes all magic resistance bonuses, i.e. Planeswalker's Cloak.
Here's a list of spells, which are negated by Ghost Scepter (this also applies to units under Pugna's Decripify and Ethereal Blade's Banish):

Additional Fact
As Pugna's second attack is Magic type, it is possible to attack Decripified units if you have Sange/Sange and Yasha/Desolator/Orb of Slow. However, you will not deal extra damage (your attack is resisted by magic resistance, which by default is 75%).

Fun Facts about Force Staff
1. Double-clicking Force Staff will push you in the direction you are facing.
2. Using Force Staff while Batrider has caught an enemy with Flaming Lasso will not break it.
3. Using Force Staff on Wisp will push him in a random direction.
4. You can use Force Staff to easily escape while Enigma has you in Black Hole.
5. When you are channeling Sand Storm with Sand King and Force Staff is used onto you, the position of the hero changes, but the visual effect remains the same. Also applies to meat hook.
6. You can use force Staff on channeling spells like black hole and freezing storm.

Some Random DotA Facts
- By silencing Rikimaru you make him visible. Rikimaru will stay visible as long as he is silenced.
- Focus Fire(Windrunner) can hit invisible enemy units if Windrunner uses it before the enemy goes invisible.*
- Armlet can be activated and placed on SpiritBear(LoneDruid's pet) without it suffering any degen. It will not gain any strength, but it will gain all the other benefits.
- Two separate permanent invisibility will allow the unit to attack and cast spells without revealing itself. This can be easily reproduced in DotA using a combination of Mirana's ultimate with either Stealth Assassin's ultimate or Broodmother's web.
- Although Zeus' Thundergod's Wrath hits all the enemy heroes, and have true sight, it can't damage isolated invisible enemies (eg. Rikimaru, Broodmother in web).
- Fog of war updates every .4 seconds. So if you Blink into the fog and use echo slam/Qop scream/heat seeking missle too early, you will miss due to the fact you haven't seen the enemy yet.
- When Huskar and Necro's ulti are both boosted by sceptre, it is possible to instant kill anyone.
- Medusa's split shot uses a bear form spell as base with a transformation time of 0.1 seconds just like Troll Warlord, because of that you are also able to dodge disables with switching it on/off.
(For those who doesn't know, you can avoid storm bolt or any similar skills with Troll's transformation, and so do Medusa)

WinSetupFromUSB – Install Windows XP from USB Flash Drive

This guide will show you, how to use WinSetupFromUSB to create a bootable USB Flash Drive including all Windows source files, plus the following installation of Windows XP. Compare to the different USB_Multiboot versions, WinSetupFromUSB comes with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and is in my opinion easier to use.

Here you can get the latest version of the program and you will also find many detailed informations about WinSetupFromUSB.
I’ve tested this guide with a 32-bit version of Windows XP and a 64-bit version of Windows Vista and it worked flawlessly.

Prerequisites:

All you need is:

a USB Flash Drive with at least 1GB of storage
the original Windows XP Setup CD
WinSetupFromUSB

If you use nLite to slim down your version of Windows XP, please keep the following in mind:

DO NOT remove “Manual Install and Upgrade”
under Operating System Options!

I also recommend to integrate Service Pack 3 into your Windows XP source files.

1. Preparations

Download and install WinSetupFromUSB. Default installation path is C:\WinSetupFromUSB.
Create a new folder with the name WINXPCD in the root directory of drive C:\ and copy all files from your Windows XP Setup CD into this folder. Depending on your version of Windows XP, the content of C:\WINXPCD should look approximately like this:

The following files will show you, which Service Pack is already integrated into your CD:

WIN51IC.SP1, Sevice Pack 1
WIN51IC.SP2, Sevice Pack 2
WIN51IC.SP3, Sevice Pack 3

2. Start WinSetupFromUSB

Connect the USB Flash Drive to your PC and start WinSetupFromUSB. It should show up under USB Disk Selection :

Click on Browse under Windows 2000/XP/2003 Source and navigate to the folder with your Windows XP Source Files. It should be C:\WINXPCD:

Click OK and C:\WINXPCD should show up under Windows 2000/XP/2003 Source :

4. Format USB Flash Drive

PeToUSB or HP Format Tool are used to format the USB Flash Drive. There is no need to download these programs seperately as they are already included in WinSetupFromUSB.
USB Flash Drives up to 2GB should be formatted with PeToUSB in FAT16, USB Flash Drives with 4GB or more with HP Format Tool in FAT32.
I will use PeToUSB to format my Kingston Data Traveler with 2GB.
In the main window of WinSetupFromUSB click PeToUSB under Format target using to start the program. The USB Flash Drive should show up under Destination Drive. Check USB Removable, Enable Disk Format and Quick Format. Uncheck Enable File Copy under File Copy Options :

Click Start and answer the following two questions “Continue?” with Yes.

All existing volumes and data will be lost!

If everything goes well, the message “Operation Completed Successfully!” should appear. Click OK and close PeToUSB.
The process with HP Format Tool is similar.

5. Copy Windows XP Source Files

To start the process of copying the Windows XP source files to the USB Flash Drive, click GO in the main window of WinSetupFromUSB. Depending on the write speed of your USB Flash drive it may take a while to copy all files.

At the end the following notice about the Windows installation process should be displayed:

Click OK and close WinSetupFromUSB with EXIT.

6. Windows Installation – Part 1

Connect the USB Flash Drive to your PC and turn on the computer. Press ESC at the boot screen and you will be able to select the USB Flash Drive as your boot device from the boot menu.

The ESC key is used by ASUS for the Eee PC series.
Other manufacturers may use other keys, e.g. F8 or F12.

After booting from USB Flash Drive, the following menu should be displayed:

Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to get to the next menu:

First part of Windows XP Home Edition setup
Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time

First part of Windows XP Home Edition setup is already selected. Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to start the Text mode part of setup. During this part you can create, delete and format partitions and finally the setup files are copied to your hard disk. At the end the system will restart automatically.

7. Windows Installation – Part 2

After restart, boot the PC again from your USB Flash Drive. The same menu should be displayed:

Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time is already selected. Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to start the GUI mode part of setup. During this part you will be asked for your product key, timezone, usernames and other necessary informations. At the end the system will restart automatically.

8. Windows Installation – Part 3

After restart, boot the PC again from your USB Flash Drive. The same menu should be displayed:

Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to get to the next menu:

Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time is already selected. Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to Start Windows for the first time. The Windows installation process will be finished and finally the Windows Desktop will appear.

DO NOT disconnect the USB Flash Drive too early!

At next startup you can boot into Windows from your hard disk.

After successsful installation, the following boot menu will always be displayed during startup:

Adding me to sudoers

I do not like to switch to root, each time I need to perform administrative tasks, so I like to use sudo instead, to do this install sudo first:

aptitude install sudo

then add the following line to your /etc/sudoers file using the command visudo

ggarron ALL=(ALL) ALL

change ggarron for your user, if you want to read more about sudoers click here

Installing X

I decided to use fluxbox, because it is light, and has all I need to work on my laptop, it the window manager that DSL uses, and I like DSL :).

sudo aptitude install fluxbox

Now install the X-server

sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg

OK now we should have Fluxbox up and running, lets go for the basing menus, copy the default menu example to be your first menu

sudo cp /etc/X11/fluxbox/system.fluxbox-menu /etc/X11/fluxbox/fluxbox-menu

And copy the default user menu to your own Home directory to be your first fluxbox menu

cp /etc/X11/fluxbox/fluxbox.menu-user $HOME/.fluxbox/menu

Add X-term

I know you want to start fluxbox, but we need two more things to be able to start working in a GUI environment, the first thing is to install Xterm

sudo aptitude install xterm

Then add it to the Fluxbox menu, read how to add programs to Fluxbox menu to know how to do it.
Note that we have not installed KDM, GDM or XDM so we will have to start GUI in the old way

startx

If you do not want this, you can install gdm, or xdm, or kdm as you prefer, I want to keep this installation really light.

Beautifying the Desktop

Before installing the applications, lets make our Desktop a little bit more "eyecandy" if this word can be used, we will install conky which is one of my favorite applications in DSL, be sure to have own_window option to "no", for it to appear directly on your Desktop, as it do on DSL
To make Conky start each time you log into Fluxbox, add this line to $HOME/.fluxbox/startup

conky &

be sure it to appear before this other line

exec /usr/bin/fluxbox

which needs to be the last one

Configuring the necessary Laptop software

If yours is not a Laptop jump to the next section
Wifi

sudo aptitude install wifi-radar

Your own DNS server
As some WiFi routers do now work as they should when they act as DNS server, I prefer to have my own on my laptop, so lets install pdnsd

sudo aptitude install pdnsd

And configure it to work with root server, when it asks you about that, after that, edit your /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and be sure this line is uncommented

prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1;

CPU frequency
You may want to install this, to save battery power, and avoid overheating, for both your laptop and battery.

sudo aptitude install cpufreqd

Now start it:

sudo /etc/init.d/cpufreqd start

If it can not start (as in my case) you may need to load the right module, read here to know how to do it, according to your processor, but basically you need to choose between these lines

The applications software

Now we are ready to install the application software

CenterICQ is a text based MSN, Yahoo, ICQ client.
After installing all these stuff, remember to create the necessary menus to access the software from FluxBox, or you will have to start them using the command line.

Installing the rest of the software

Office applications
You should now decide between OpenOffice or other alternatives, like gnumeric and abiword, I do not consider Koffice as it will install a kdebase, and kdelibs, which is like having KDE in your system.
If you want to install openoffice run:

sudo aptitude install openoffice.org

and if abiword and gnumeric

sudo aptitude install abiword gnumeric

Skype
To install skype, you can download the .deb from its page, or install skype from repositories

How to remove Symantec Antivirus without using a password:

   1. Open Registry Editor.
   2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Administrator Only\Security\
   3. Change the value for useVPuninstallpassword key from 1 to 0.
   4. Exit Registry Editor and now you can uninstall Symantec AntiVirus Client.

Run Scripts on Background (Linux)

Run a script in the background by appending an & to the end of a command, for instance:

$> ./slow_script.pl &

If you run a script and forgot to append the &. You can hit Ctrl+Z to pause the process that is currently running, and give you a shell. Then type bg to send that process into the background. To see how its doing, you can use the jobs command. To send it back into the foreground you can use the fg command.

So for example you might do something like this:

$> ./slow_script.pl
hits Ctrl+Z
[1]+ Stopped ./some_slow_script.pl

$> bg

Metalia bookkeeping files keep the track of processed files. The names of production output files can be derived from production input files, for each output file SAM metadata are created upon the output file is copied to the concatenation server. There is a cron job for each production projects that periodically updates Metalia files according to the database records about output files. CronSubmit^? script that submits production jobs submits only jobs for input files that have unprocessed files in the Metalia file. Metalia files are created using DatasetCreator^? script.

5) Run DatasetCreator

Clean up after production period

before clean up be sure that severe error summary is updated (instructions)
Clean up past production log files from output directories on concatenation servers. It is best to delete directories after backing up log files. tar directories and move them to cdfprd@fncdfsrv0:/cdf/proj/127.prod_log/Archive
- ssh into the production concatenation server
- Stop all cronjobs for the project (production/concatenation/upload)

HOW TO EDIT CRONTAB EXAMPLE:
ssh -l cdfprd fncdfsrv9
crontab -e

Remember, crontab is responsibility of a user and is not backed up. If unsure of yourself, save it to some file:

crontab -l >& my_crontab_copy.txt

cd /export/stage/
cd into the project directory
tar up the logs, crashed and recovery directories,
tar file name should contain stream name, period number, server name
check that resulting tar file is meaninful and copy it to archive directory

How to Install Windows 7 from USB (Flash) Drive

Step 1: Create a bootable USB drive
1. Start UltraISO (V9.3 or newer version, download here)
2. Choose ‘File’->’Open’ from main menu and open ISO file of Windows 7, for example “d:\ISO\WIN7_DVD.iso”; You may also open the original DVD by 'File'->'Open CD/DVD' from main menu if you have not an bootable ISO
3. Choose ‘Bootable’->’Write disk image’ from main menu
4.Insert the USB drive you intend to boot from
5. Choose proper “Write Method”,USB-HDD+ is recommanded
6. Hit “Write” to get a bootable USB drive

Step 2:Configure the BIOS of your computer
You should now reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to boot from USB. Instructions for doing so wildly from system to system, but generally entail the following:
1. Reboot the system.
2. While booting (before Windows starts loading), get into the BIOS configuration screen by hitting something like F1, F2, Delete or Escape. Hotkey instructions are generally provided on the screen.
3. Go to the section that contains your boot devices.
4. With your USB drive plugged in, the USB drive should be listed. If it isn’t, your system might not support booting from USB. Assuming that it is supported (as is the case with virtually all modern hardware), promote your USB drive to the primary boot device.
5. Exit from the BIOS configuration, saving all changes.
If you’re completely new to BIOS configuration, BIOS for Beginners over at Tom’s Hardware might be a good primer. Be aware though, that you can seriously screw up your system by providing incorrect settings!

This will list all your network interfaces. The wired network interface is usually labeled as eth0. Stop this network by typing

(I just copied this from the CMS website. I'm archiving it here so I don't have to find the page every time I configure a PC to be able to connect to the LPC cluster.)

Connecting to the LPC from a Linux or Mac OSX PC

To connect to the LPC cluster you need to have kerberos and openssh with gss support installed on your system. This is already included in Scientific Linux 4 Mac OSX. In addtion you will need get the krb5.conf file for Fermilab and save it as /etc/krb5.conf .

Also make the following edit to /etc/ssh/ssh_config or ~/.ssh/config on your local machine:

GSSAPIAuthentication yes
GSSAPIDelegateCredentials yes

To connect to the LPC cluster:

Get an addressless and forwardable kerberos ticket for the FNAL.GOV kerberos realm:

/usr/krb5/bin/kinit -n -f user@FNAL.GOV
or
/usr/kerberos/bin/kinit -A -f user@FNAL.GOV

You will be prompted for your kerberos password in the FNAL.GOV realm.

To verify that you have an addressless and forwardable kerberos ticket:

klist -a -f

Connect to the cluster:

ssh cmslpc.fnal.gov

KNOWN ISSUES and WORK AROUNDS

1) To log into the cluster from an SLC machine kinit -A -f user@FNAL.GOV ; ssh -2 user@cmslpc.fnal.gov

2) MAC users who have updated their ssh to a version greater than 3.8 will need to use both the -X and -Y options on the ssh command line:
ssh -X -Y cmslpc
This will enable X11 forwarding.

The versions of ssh that do not work with the round robin queue are the ones that do not support gssapi or do not handle the redirection correctly and break afs authentication. The ones known not to work correctly are:

OpenSSH with gssapi support in SL3 breaks afs authentication
WRQ Reflection X ssh client (based on OpenSSH 3.6.2 with gssapi) breaks afs authentication
Any Fermi OpenSSH before 3.5p1f12 breaks afs authentication.

For these versions the LPC cluster direct access nodes must be used if you would like to access your afs area to edit your public_html directory.

LPC cluster direct access nodes.

Other versions of ssh for Linux or Windows PC's may not work correctly (i.e. AFS authentication error messages at login) with the round robin queue. If accessing the LPC cluster through the queue produces error messages, you can try accessing the LPC cluster through one of the following direct access nodes:

ssh cmslpc11.fnal.gov (SL4)
ssh cmslpc12.fnal.gov (SL4)

The direct access nodes are equivalent to other LPC cluster nodes except that they can be accessed directly.

Non-kerberized ssh clients

Any ssh client without kerberos authentication can be used to connect to the LPC cluster. A Cryptocard is used to generate a password in this case.

Connecting to the LPC Cluster from a Windows PC

Connecting to the LPC cluster through the round-robin queue from a Windows PC is known to work with Kerberized PuTTY. Other terminal programs such as WRQ Relection ssh and openssh for Cygwin only work with the direct access nodes (see above). Directions are given below for establishing a connection to the LPC cluster with Kerberized PuTTY. Directions for installing Cygwin/X or Xming, both free X servers for Windows, are also given. These packages are optional since commercial alternatives such as WRQ Reflection and Exceed exist. Also included are directions for using WinSCP and OpenAFS for Windows to access files in your account.

Kerberos and SSH:

A patched version of PuTTY which supports Kerberos authentication for SSH on Windows can be found at http://matthew.loar.name/software/putty/. Download the MSI installer to your desktop and run it. Putty will be installed in c:/Program Files/Putty. You will also need to download and install MIT Kerberos for Windows. The installer can be found at the MIT Kerberos download page.

To get your Kerberos ticket:
Select Start ->All Programs->Kerberos for Windows->Network Identity Manager
Enter your Kerberos principal, password and FNAL.GOV for the realm and click Login.

To connect to the LPC cluster for the first time with PuTTY:
Double click on the PuTTY icon in the directory where you unzipped the zip file.
In the PuTTY configuration window:
select Session and enter cmslpc.fnal.gov in the HostName field
select Connection->Data and enter your username in the Auto-login username field
select Connection->SSH and select "2 only" for "Preferred SSH protocol version"
select Connection->SSH->X11 and check "Enable X11 forwarding"
select Session and enter LPC in the Saved Sessions field and click Save
double click on LPC in the Saved Sessions list

To connect to the LPC cluster with PuTTY:
Double click the PuTTY icon.
In the PuTTY configuration window:
select Session and double click on LPC in the Saved Sessions list

Kerberos and SFTP:

A version of WinSCP which supports Kerberos authentication for SFTP on Windows can be downloaded from Sourceforge.net. Be sure to download version 4.0.7 as this is compatible with the Putty mentioned above. Use this program to transfer files to and from the LPC cluster. Because the afs authentication does not work correctly, you can only read from your home directory on afs with WinSCP. However, you can read and write from /uscms/home and /uscms_data/d1 with WinSCP.

X servers:

Cygwin/X and Xming are implementations of X11 on the Windows platform. With X11 forwarding enabled in PuTTY and an X server running, programs like Root and emacs can be displayed on the Windows desktop.

To install Cygwin/X follow the download and installation directions from the user's guide.

After installing Cygwin/X copy c:\cygwin\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat to the desktop. Edit startxwin.bat and remove the line
run xterm -e /usr/bin/bash -l

To start the Xserver double click on startxwin.bat.

OpenAFS:

Files from your afs home area can be accessed through AFS. The OpenAFS client for Windows allows users to access their files in AFS.

The OpenAFS client for Windows can be downloaded from here.

During the installation enter fnal.gov as the AFS cell. After installation is complete you will be required to reboot to activate the OpenAFS client. After rebooting the OpenAFS client will prompt you to enter your AFS username and password to obtain an AFS ticket. This prompt can be canceled since the AFS ticket can be obtained using aklog.

To get your AFS ticket:
Obtain your Kerberos ticket as described above.

To access AFS files:
Select Start ->All Programs->OpenAFS->Authetication or the padlock icon in the system tray.
In the AFS client window select Drive Letters and click on Add.
Enter the path in AFS that you want to access.
Select Start->My Computer and double click on the newly created drive letter.

1) Download Flash Player for Linux.

Windows XP: List of Services to Disable to Increase Speed

XP has a ton of services enabled by default. By knowing what these services do (or don’t do), you can really speed up your system by disabling the ones you don’t need.

If you ever find something not working correctly, you should reset it. However, these are the services that I disable. This guide is very conservative. Many of these services are activated even though only the minority of users will need them. I describe the use of these services so you can make a decision if you should have it enabled or not.

How to Access Your Microsoft Services:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type "Services.msc" (without quotes of course). Hit Enter.
4. Scroll down and highlight the service you want to adjust
5. Right-click on it and choose Properties
6. Click the stop button.
7. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar.

Services to Disable:

Smart Card / Smart Card Helper - If you don’t have a smart card system, you don’t need this service. As smart cards have really never taken off… i doubt you need this. Kill it.
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service - Unless you run NetBIOS on your system, you don’t need this service. Kill it.
Uninterruptible Power Supply - Although I should have a UPS, I don’t. If you don’t, then disable this service.
Remote Registry service - This service allows one to remotely edit the registry through a network connection. If you are editing your registry remotely, then you are too jedi-ninja to be reading this guide. The rest of us should have this off for security alone.
Error Reporting Service - A program crashes and microsoft wants to know about it. Give up your extra CPU cycles to help Gates polish his OS, or you can just disable it.
Alerter - This is so useless SP2 turns this off for you. For the rest of you folks, you should turn it off too.
Clipbook - This service allows you to cut and paste across your private network. Most programs that actually allow you to do this use their own ways for doing this.Useless.Stop it.
Computer Browser - If you are on a LAN, keep it enabled. If not, stop it. It allows you to see the other computers on your network.
FastUser Switching Compatibility - If you keep multiple users/logins on your current computer, you should leave this enabled. If you always log-in the same way as the same person, you should disable this.
Messenger Service - Kill it.
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing Service - If you don’t use NetMeeting, you should stop this service.
Network DDE/Network DDE DSDM - DDE DSDM was an excellent idea by Microsoft that flopped. Disable both of these.
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager Service - I use remote desktop all the time. However, you should not have it enabled unless you use it.
Telnet Service - This allows you to use telnet to log into your system from a remote location. It’s a security risk so don’t keep it enabled unless you use it.SP2 disables it by default now.

(b) What minimum kinetic beam energy T_B is required to produce anti-protons with mass m_p = 938 MeV in the process described above.
(c) In the actual experiment at Fermilab, the protons are collided with a block of heavy metal. This means the protons in the target are bound inside heavy nuclei with the result that the protons have a kinetic energy T_T . What incident beam energy E_B would be required to produce anti-protons off of those protons with T_T , if their velocity was directed toward the beam. Express your answer in terms of E_T , p_T and m_p.

These solutions come with absolutely no guarantees. A couple of the solutions have errors, I just want to archive my solutions that is why I'm posting them here.

Consider an idealized crystal (Kossel Crystal) made up of atoms that are rigid cubes of edge length a. Assume that the crystal is in the shape of a cube having edge na where n greater than or equal to 2 is an integer. Thus the total number of atoms in the crystal is Ntot = n³.

a) Calculate the following as a function of n:
• N_bulk = the number of atoms interior to the crystal
• N_faces = the number of atoms on the faces of the crystal that are not at corners or edges
• N_edges = the number of atoms at the edges of the crystal that are not at corner
• N_corners = the number of atoms at the corners (vertices) of the crystal

Note from the Euler theorem that faces + verticies = edges + 2, in this case 6 + 8 = 12 + 2. Check your results to be sure that N_tot = N_bulk + N_faces + N_edges + N_corners.

b) Next, assume that these atoms only have nearest neighbor forces such that the bonds between neighbors have energy −b where b > 0. An atom in the bulk will have energy ebulk = −6b/2 = −3b, since each bond is shared by two atoms. Determine e_faces, e_edges, and e_corners for the other types of atoms.

c) Calculate the total energy, E_total, of the crystal due to all atoms and the total energy, E_bulkonly, due only to bulk atoms, both as functions of n. The fraction of energy that is not associated with bulk atoms is

f := (E_total − E_bulkonly)/E_total.

Determine f as a function of n and make a plot of f versus n for n = 2 to 10, 000. What do you conclude from your graph about the energy of this crystal as a function of its size? How big would the crystal have to be to have 99.9% of its energy accounted for by bulk atoms?

You will also need a Maxwell relation that you can find from dG. The quantity (∂T/∂p)_S,N is called the isentropic (reversible adiabatic) change in temperature with applied pressure.

b) Evaluate your result for an ideal monatomic gas, for which pV = NRT in terms of the variables T and p. Integrate the resulting equation to show that T/p^2/5 = constant. Substitute for T to obtain a relationship obeyed in the V, p plane. This relationship describes the reversible adiabatic segments of the Carnot cycle.

Note: To simplify the notation, define P := p/(kT) and M := μ/(kT), so that
M^α= (P − A)/B;(M^γ)²/ = (P − C)/D.
Be careful when taking square roots to guarantee that physical quantities such as molar volumes are positive.

Find the maximum term in the sum, take its logarithm and compare to ln s. Hint: ln x is a monotonically increasing function of x so the maximum of x and the maximum of ln x occur at the same place. Use Stirling’s approximation in the form lnN! ≈ N lnN − N and then do the required differentiation.

b) How can you explain the precision of your result, given the fact that other terms in the sum were neglected?

c) For Ndistinguishable particles each having three equally spaced states with energies 0, ε and 2ε, the multiplicity function is

g(N,m) = Σ_p [ N!/(N − p)!(m − p)!(2p − m)! ]

where m = E/ε and E is the total energy. The sum is restricted to values of p for which
all of the factors in the denominator are positive or zero (remember 0! = 1). Find the value of p that determines the maximum term in the sum. This will hopefully convince you that the microcanonical ensemble is not a very tractable way to solve problems.

Here, the gamma function Γ(n/2+1) = (n/2)Γ(n/2) = (n/2)! suffices to define the factorial whenever n is an odd integer. We also have Γ(1/2) = π^(1/2). For large n, practically all of the volume of a hypersphere lies near its surface.

a) Calculate exactly the fraction of volume of a hypersphere that lies within ΔR of its surface. Equate this fraction to 1−ε where ε is very small and solve the resulting equation exactly for ΔR/R in terms of ε and n.

b) Find an approximate solution to this equation for ΔR/R very much less than 1 but for n possibly extremely large. If you are not careful to note that nΔR/R might be large, you will get the wrong answer! Evaluate your answer for ε = 10⁻¹⁰ and n = 10²³.

c) Estimate the fraction of volume within ΔR of the surface of a hypersphere by means of the derivative dV = ΔR(dV/dR), equate again to 1 − ε and solve for ΔR/R. Note that for ε = 10⁻¹⁰ this result is practically independent of ε for ε very much less than 1. Why does this result differ from the result of part (b)? What went wrong in this analysis?

d) Based on what you have learned, go back to part (a) and show that a good approximation is

ε = exp(−nΔR/R)

provided that ΔR/R is small, even when nΔR/R is not small.

Show also that this gas satisfies the ideal gas law and relate its pressure to its energy density. Hint: You don’t need to worry about computing the dependence of on N; all you need to know is the functional form of in regard to its dependence on V and E.

If the partition separating V' from V" is removed and the gases are allowed to mix, we will show in class that there will be no entropy change provided that the initial pressures of the two gases are equal. Such will be the case if V'/N' = V"/" = V/N, where V = V' + V" and N = N'+ N". However, if V'/N'≠ V"/N" but still V = V'+ V" and N = N'+ N", the initial pressures of the two gases will not be equal and there will be an entropy change ΔS ≠ 0.

a) Calculate the dimensionless entropy change ΔS/NkB for a process at constant T when atoms of the same gas are mixed as discussed above under conditions for which V'/N' and V"/N" are arbitrary but still V = V'+ V" and N = N'+ N". Show that your answer can be written entirely as a function of two variables, x = N"/N and y = V"/V.

b) Consider your answer as a function of y at fixed x and then as a function of x at fixed y. What is the minimum value of ΔS/NkB and for what conditions does it occur? Sketch curves of ΔS/NkB as a function of y for a few values of x.

c) How much heat Q is absorbed by the system during this process? Is this process reversible or irreversible, and under what conditions? Note: Be careful, this is not an isolated system!

We are interested in the state for m = 30 so we dump all output except for m = 30 and neighboring states m = 29 and m = 31. The resulting values are:

Consider N identical but distinguishable and very weakly interacting one-dimensional simple harmonic oscillators at fixed positions in a solid, each with energy levels separated by h_barω. We know that the multiplicity of a state having total energy E = mh_barω is

where ∆ω is the volume of phase space between E − ∆E and E. Classically, the constant ω_o remains unknown, but we can determine it by comparison with a quantum mechanical result in an approriate limit.

(a) Find an approximate expression for the above expression for Ω in the limit of high temperatures and express your results in terms of E/h_barω and N .
Hint: Write out the expression for Ω in more detail and think about the relative values of N and m at high temperatures.

(b) The classical Hamiltonian for N simple harmonic oscillators is

(This is an imaginary conversation between Pontius Pilate and his servant Giaus, after he had spelled the death sentence for Christ.)

"It suddenly closed in on me Giaus, the impact of how trapped I was. The proud arm of Rome with all its boast of justice was to be but a dirty dagger in the pudgy hands of the priest. I was waiting in the room for him, Giaus, that I used for court, officially enthroned with cloak and guard when they let him in. Well Giaus, don't smile at this as you value your jaw, but I've had no peace since the day he walked into my judgment hall. It has been years, Giaus, but these scenes I read from the back of my eyelids every night. You've seen Caesar when he was young inspect the Legion; his arrogant manner was childlike compared to the manner of this Nazarene. He didn't have to strut, you see. He walked towards my throne, arms bound, with the strident mastery and control, that by its very audacity silenced the room for an instant and left me with a trembling and an insane desire to stand up and salute. The clerk began reading the absurd list of charges. The priestly delegation punctuating these with the palm rubbings, the beard strokings, the eye rollings and the pious gutturals I had learned to ignore. But I more felt it Giaus, than heard it. I questioned him mechanically, he answered very little. But what he said and the way he said it, it was as if his level gaze had pulled my naked soul right up into my eyes and was probing it there. And a voice kept saying in my ears, "Why? You're on trial Pilate and that the man wasn't even listening to the charges" You'd have sworn he just come in out with a friendly interest to see what was going to happen to me. And the very pressure of his standing there had grown unbearable Giaus, when a slave rushed in, all a tremble, interrupting court bringing a message from my wife Claudia. She had stabbed of the stylus in the childish way that she has when she is distraught, “Don't judge this amazing man Pilate”, she wrote, “I was haunted in dreams by him this night.” Giaus, I tried to free him, from that moment on I tried and I'll always think he knew it. I declared him out of my jurisdiction being a Galilean. But the native King Herod discovered that He was born in Judea and sent him right back to me. I then appealed to crowd that had gathered in the streets hoping they were his sympathizers. But Caiphas had stationed agitators to whip up the beast that cry blood. And you know how any citizen here loves just after breakfast to cry for another’s blood. I had him beaten Giaus. A thorough barracks room beating. I’m really still not sure why. To appease to crowd I guess. But do we Romans really need a reason for beatings. That's the code isn't it for anything we don't understand? Giaus, it didn't work. The crowd roared like some slavering beast when I brought him back. If only you could have watched him Giaus, they have thrown some rags of mocked purple over his pulped and bleeding shoulders, they have jammed chaplet of thorns down in his forehead. It fitted, Giaus, it all fitted. He stood there; watching them from my balcony flamed from weakness by now but royal I tell you. Not just pain but pity shining from him eyes. And I kept thinking, this is somehow all monstrous, upside down. That purple is real, that crown is real, and somehow this animal noise the crowd is shrieking should be praise. And then Caiphas played his master stroke on me. He announced there in public that this Jesus claimed a crown and this was treason to Ceasar. And the guards began to glance at one another quickly. And that mob of spineless filth began to shout, "Hail Caesar! Hail Caesar!” And I know right then I was beaten and that's when I gave the order. Giaus, I couldn't look at him. Then I did a childish thing, I called for water and there on the balcony I washed my hands of that whole affair. Giaus, as they lead him away, I did look up and he turned, and looked at me, no smile, no pity. He just glanced at my hands. And I feel the weight of his eyes on them from now on. But you're yawning Giaus, I've kept you up. And the fact of the matter is, you're in need of rest in some holidays. Claudia would be asleep by now. Rolls of lighted lamps lying her couch. She can't sleep in the dark anymore, not since that afternoon. You see Giaus, the sun went down when my guards executed him. Yes, that's what I said. I don't know how or what. I only know I was there. And thougth it was the middle of the day, it turn as black as the tunnels of hell in that miserable city. While I tried to compose Claudia, and explain how I'd been trapped. And she railed at me with her dream. She's had that dream ever since. And she sleeps in the dark. Some form of it. That there was to be a new Caesar and that I killed him Oh we've been to Egypt to their seers and magicians. We've listen by the hours to the oracles of the musky temples of Greece chattering there inanities. We call it an oriental curse that we're under in. We tried to break a thousand ways but there is no breaking it. But do you know why I keep going on Giaus? Deeper than the curse is the haunting, driving certainty that he's still somewhere near. That I have an unfinished business with him. And now then, as I walk by the lake he's following me. And much as that strikes terror the only hope.
You see Giaus, if I could walk up to him and this time salute. And tell him, "I know now. Who ever he is? He was the only man worth the
whole Judea that day. I know I was entrapped. That I trapped myself. Tell him, here's one Roman who really wishes he were Caesar. I believe that would do it. Don't you think so? I believe he would listen and believe that I meant it. And at last see him smile.
It's quite tonight. A breeze stirring by the lake.
Good night! You better run along. No! No! I think, will you waken my slave outside the door? At tell him to bring me a cloak. My heavy one please. I'll walk by the lake. Yes it's dark out there Giaus but I won't be alone. I guess I never really have been alone.

Crucial things you may want know before buying this phone:

1) This phone can't multi-task. You can't do anything when you are taking a call. Not even check what's the time. I'm used to Nokia phones where you can play games even if you're taking a call (using the loudspeaker option of course).

2) The software that comes with it does not work. I can't synchronize it with my laptop.

3) The camera that comes with it is almost useless. It does not have auto focus feature thus you will almost always get blurry pictures.

4) Comes with a cheap earphone and the earphone jack does not fit well with the earphone.

5) Really difficult to get Java programs work on it. I'm some kind a computer geek, but I had trouble with the Java feature of this phone.

6) Some SIM card (T-Mobile in my case) doesn't work in the SIM 1 slot.
